Episode 3 of “The Westies” wastes absolutely no time raising the stakes. Every time Jimmy and the crew seem to catch a break, another problem lands in their lap.
From John Gotti’s brutal interrogation of Mickey Flanagan to FBI Agent Polk closing in on the truth and a mission that quickly spirals out of control, this episode delivers one tense moment after another.
Let’s break it all down.

John Gotti Pushes Mickey Flanagan To His Breaking Point
The episode opens with Gambino mob boss John Gotti trying to beat answers out of Mickey Flanagan.
Convinced Mickey knows what happened to Vinnie Zaccaro, Gotti has him hanging from the ceiling while demanding answers.
The beating is brutal, but Mickey refuses to betray the Westies or give Gotti anything he can use against the crew.
Mickey deserves his flowers here. He may not always be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but when it comes to loyalty, he never wavers.
No matter how badly Gotti wants him to crack, Mickey refuses to squeal.
Meanwhile, Jimmy convinces Sweeney to ask Big Paul Castellano, the head of the Gambino crime family, to intervene.
Of course, Big Paul isn’t interested in doing favors. Instead, he reveals Gotti has been working with the Colombians behind his back by selling cocaine without permission.
Before Mickey earns his freedom, the Westies have to complete a dangerous assignment by wiping out the Colombian operation and sending Gotti a message.
FBI Agent Polk Isn’t Buying The Story
While the Westies prepare for their next move, FBI Agent Polk turns her attention to Officer Keenan, and it’s immediately clear she isn’t convinced the Vinnie Zaccaro investigation adds up.
She walks Keenan through the evidence piece by piece.
State Trooper Ward is murdered, Zaccaro’s driver’s license conveniently turns up beside the body, his fingerprints are found on the murder weapon, and somehow those same fingerprints also appear at an Irish bar robbery in South Boston.
The more Polk lays everything out, the more obvious it becomes that she believes someone is trying to frame Zaccaro.
Keenan sticks to the official story, but it’s equally obvious he knows far more than he’s willing to admit.
Their conversation quietly becomes one of the most important scenes in the episode because it shows just how close Polk is to uncovering the truth.
The Starship Mission Doesn’t Go As Planned
Big Paul’s assignment sends Jimmy, Pat Murphy, Connor, Sean, and Jimmy’s girlfriend, Bridget to the Starship nightclub to scout the Colombians’ operation before making their move.
Before the chaos begins, I have to acknowledge how sharp the Westies looked on club night.
They cleaned up surprisingly well, which made what happened next even more entertaining.
Jimmy earns Jose’s trust by claiming Vinnie Zaccaro sent him to pick up a “key,” or a kilogram of cocaine.
Jose falls for the story and unknowingly gives Jimmy a tour of the Colombians’ stash operation.
The plan is working perfectly until Papi, Jose’s father, spots Jimmy where he clearly doesn’t belong.
At the same time, Connor warns Pat Murphy to stay away from the brown liquor. Naturally, Pat ignores him.
What starts as a few drinks quickly turns into an all-out brawl with chairs flying, punches being thrown, and the Westies fighting their way out of the club.
Ironically, Pat’s impulsive behavior ends up helping the mission because the distraction keeps everyone from realizing Jimmy has just learned exactly how the Colombians operate.
Keenan Learns The Truth
Away from the nightclub, Keenan confronts his estranged son, Danny, who’s been running errands for the Westies.
During their conversation, Keenan finally learns Pat Murphy is responsible for killing the Boston state trooper.
The revelation weighs heavily on him.
Already struggling with guilt over his past decisions and his fractured relationship with Danny, Keenan heads to confession searching for some sense of peace.
Whether he actually finds it is another story.
The Westies Strike Back
With the reconnaissance complete, it’s time for the Westies to carry out Big Paul’s orders.
Before the mission begins Bridget gives Jimmy and the crew Brendan Cahill’s rocket-propelled grenade.
It feels like a risky decision from the moment it happens, and it immediately raises questions about whether she’ll be able to keep it a secret.
The assault on the Starship is fast, violent, and effective.
Gunfire erupts as the Westies storm the club, Sean fires the RPG into the basement, and the resulting explosion wipes out the Colombians’ operation.
The mission is a success, but Jimmy makes one decision that immediately stands out.
Instead of killing Jose, he lets him walk away. That choice may prove to be just as important as the mission itself.
Big Paul honors his word by ordering Gotti to release Mickey Flanagan.
Bruised, battered, and bloodied, Mickey finally comes home after refusing to betray the crew despite everything he endured.
The Ending Changes Everything
Just when it looks like the Westies have earned a moment to celebrate, the episode delivers one surprise after another.
Brendan Cahill casually mentions he’ll be stopping by to pick up his rocket launcher, making it clear Bridget’s secret isn’t going to stay hidden for long.
At the same time, Officer Keenan confronts Sweeney with the truth.
He knows Pat Murphy killed the Boston state trooper, and he’s convinced Pat will flip if he’s ever arrested.
Keenan offers Sweeney a deal: keep Danny away from the Westies, and he’ll make the Boston investigation disappear.
Sweeney appears to accept the arrangement, but the episode isn’t finished.
Pat leaves the bar alone, unaware someone is following him.
Moments later he’s attacked from behind, suffocated with a plastic bag, and left for dead.
When the camera finally reveals his killer, it’s Officer Keenan, delivering one of the most shocking moments of the season so far.
My Thoughts On “The Westies” Episode 3
Episode 3 is easily my favorite installment of the season.
It balances action, suspense, and character development without slowing the story down, and every major storyline moves forward in a meaningful way.
Mickey proves his loyalty, Agent Polk inches closer to exposing the truth, Jimmy makes a decision that could come back to haunt him, and the final minutes completely reshape the series heading into Episode 4.
I’m especially interested to see whether Jimmy’s decision to spare Jose and Bridget’s decision to borrow Brendan Cahill’s RPG create even bigger problems in the episodes ahead.
Neither storyline feels finished, and I have a feeling both will have major consequences.
