If you’ve been rocking with Whoopi Goldberg for years like I have, this news is pretty exciting.
A brand-new documentary about the EGOT icon is officially in the works, and it’s shaping up to be a deeply personal look at the life, legacy, and everyday moments that make Whoopi Goldberg… well, Whoopi.
The untitled project will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir, whose documentary “The Perfect Neighbor” earned widespread praise.
The film is being produced by Imagine Documentaries and Message Pictures in association with One Hoe Productions.
And from what I’m hearing so far, this is not going to be one of those surface-level celebrity docs.
A Behind-The-Scenes Look At Whoopi Goldberg’s Life Today
The documentary will expand on Whoopi Goldberg’s memoir, “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother and Me,” while also giving us a front-row seat to what her life looks like right now.
One of the most interesting parts?
The cameras will follow Whoopi as she revisits her groundbreaking 1984 Broadway debut, “The Whoopi Monologues.”
She’s currently reimagining the iconic one-woman show for a new run at Lincoln Center that’s expected to open later this summer.
But the story doesn’t stop at the stage.
The documentary will also show Whoopi juggling her creative life with longtime producing partner Tom Leonardis as they develop new theater projects.
At the same time, viewers will see a more personal side of her life, including moments with her family and her new great-grandbaby.
And yes, there’s even a glimpse into her quieter life in Italy, where she’s been building a peaceful second home away from the spotlight.
Geeta Gandbhir Says The World Needs More Whoopi
Director Geeta Gandbhir says telling Whoopi Goldberg’s story is something she takes seriously.
“Whoopi Goldberg is a brilliant and groundbreaking storyteller who has shaped the landscape of entertainment for years,” Geeta Gandbhir shared.
She added that she and her producing partners feel honored to help bring Whoopi’s story to the screen.
Honestly, it’s hard to think of anyone more deserving of a documentary spotlight.
A Career That Changed Hollywood
Whoopi Goldberg has been making history for decades.
More than 30 years ago, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her unforgettable role as Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost.”
That moment was historic because it made her the first Black woman to win an Oscar in 50 years after Hattie McDaniel’s groundbreaking victory in 1940.
Since then, Whoopi has continued stacking accomplishments and eventually joined the extremely small group of entertainers who have achieved EGOT status, meaning she has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
And if you think she’s slowing down anytime soon, think again.
Along with co-hosting “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg is currently developing “Sister Act 3” for Disney+ and executive producing ABC/Hulu’s upcoming project “Welcome to My Funeral” (working title).
But when Whoopi recently reflected on her career, her proudest accomplishment was refreshingly simple.
“That I’m still here,” she said. “I didn’t fade away. I didn’t disappear. I’m still here and still here doing me.”
And honestly, that might be the most Whoopi Goldberg thing she could have said.
Now I’m curious. Will you be watching this documentary when it drops?
