Legendary singer and acclaimed session vocalist James “Jim” Gilstrap has passed away. He was 79.
According to his family, Jim Gilstrap passed away from natural causes on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
For more than five decades, Jim Gilstrap’s remarkable voice became part of the soundtrack of American music.
While many fans recognized him as the co-lead vocalist on the beloved theme song for the groundbreaking sitcom “Good Times,” his influence stretched far beyond television.
Gilstrap was one of the music industry’s most respected session singers, lending his unmistakable vocals to some of the most celebrated recordings of all time.
He was a featured vocalist with Stevie Wonder‘s Wonderlove and famously sang the opening lines of the Grammy Award winning classic “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” from the landmark album Talking Book.
He also contributed to Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions and other iconic recordings.
As a solo artist, Gilstrap found international success with his 1975 hit “Swing Your Daddy,” followed by the release of his 1976 album Love Talk, which showcased his soulful vocals and versatility as a performer.
Throughout his extraordinary career, Gilstrap worked alongside an impressive list of music legends, including Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, The Jacksons, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, James Ingram, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, George Benson, Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Teddy Pendergrass, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Brothers Johnson, Kanye West, and many others.
Beyond his incredible résumé, Gilstrap was remembered for his humility, generosity, professionalism, and deep love for music.
Although many of his greatest contributions happened behind the scenes, his voice became woven into generations of unforgettable songs.
Jim Gilstrap was the last surviving member of a family of ten siblings.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Gilstrap, his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, fellow musicians, and countless fans whose lives were touched by his music.
