Tyra Banks is not holding back.
The creator and longtime host of “America’s Next Top Model” has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging the streamer edited her interview for “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” in a way that created a false and damaging narrative about her role in some of the show’s most controversial moments.
According to court documents, Tyra claims only 16 minutes of her three-and-a-half-hour interview were used in the final docuseries.
She is seeking damages and a jury trial, arguing that key context was left out and viewers were not shown the full story.
What To Know
- Tyra Banks filed a lawsuit against Netflix on June 13.
- She claims only 16 minutes of her interview appeared in the docuseries.
- Banks alleges producers edited her comments out of context.
- The lawsuit focuses on storylines involving former contestant Shandi Sullivan and former judge Miss J. Alexander.
- Banks is seeking damages for alleged harm to her reputation and future business opportunities.
Tyra Banks Says Producers Left Out Important Context
Tyra says she agreed to participate in the documentary because she wanted to have an honest conversation about both the successes and criticisms of ANTM.
However, the lawsuit claims producers used only a small portion of her interview while cutting moments that showed her taking accountability for past decisions and controversies surrounding the show.
According to the filing, the final edit presented a version of her comments that did not accurately reflect what she said during the interview.
Shandi Sullivan Claims Are At The Center Of The Dispute
A significant portion of the lawsuit centers on former ANTM contestant Shandi Sullivan.
In the documentary, Shandi revisited an incident from her time on the show and described it as sexual assault.
Tyra claims she was unaware Shandi Sullivan would characterize the incident that way and says she was never given an opportunity to respond to those claims directly.
The lawsuit also alleges that editing choices made it appear Tyra Banks could not remember Shandi’s story, when she says the complete interview footage shows otherwise.
Tyra Banks Also Pushes Back On Miss J. Alexander Narrative
Tyra Banks is also disputing suggestions that she failed to support former ANTM judge Miss J. Alexander after he suffered a stroke.
According to the lawsuit, Tyra says she made multiple attempts to contact Miss J. after learning about his health crisis and remained in touch with him in the years that followed.
She argues viewers were not given that context because she was never informed of Miss J.’s comments before the series aired.
Why This Matters
“America’s Next Top Model” remains one of the most influential reality competition shows of the 2000s.
The Netflix docuseries reignited conversations about the show’s legacy, introducing many of its controversies to a new generation of viewers.
Now, Tyra Banks is challenging how that story was told.
As of publication, Netflix has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
For now, Tyra says viewers didn’t get the full story, and she’s taking that fight to court.
