Rapper and entrepreneur “Scales” of the group, Nappy Roots, is recovering in the hospital after he was kidnapped at his brewery in Atlanta.
According to police, the incident unfolded on Wednesday night (August 17) at the Atlantucky Brewing in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood at around 11 p.m. when the establishment was closing.
Two suspects robbed and shot a customer in the parking lot before entering the brewery and forcing Scales, whose real name is Melvin Adams, into his car at gunpoint.
Police say the suspects drove off with Adams and headed towards Hapeville.
Thankfully, Scales was able to escape, but he did suffer a gunshot wound to the leg.
He knocked on someone’s door for help and was taken to the hospital.
Scales is now in stable condition.
Police later found his vehicle on Oak Street in Hapeville.
Nappy Roots released a statement via social media writing:
Last night our brother, Scales was a victim of an attempted robbery on the evening of August 17 in Atlanta after closing our brewery, Atlantucky.
We are blessed to say that he is stable and in good spirits after suffering a leg injury. Luckily, none of our dedicated patrons of Atlantucky were at the scene or harmed during the robbery.

Skinny (William Hughes), a business partner in Atlantucky and fellow Nappy Roots member said, “I am certainly relieved that my business partner and brother Scales is safe and recovering…that is what is most important. We are certainly also praying for the patron who was shot outside the establishment.”We are blessed to say that he is stable and in good spirits after suffering a leg injury. Luckily, none of our dedicated patrons of Atlantucky were at the scene or harmed during the robbery.
Scales co-owns Atlantucky with others members of Nappy Roots and the group says this is the only incident they’ve had at the brewery since opening and they plan to increase security.
While speaking to press, Skinny noted that Atlantucky is a cashless bar and they chose to operate that way in hopes of deterring things like this from happening.
Both Atlanta and Hapeville police are investigating the case.
