When Muni Long stepped away from Brandy and Monica‘s “The Boy Is Mine Tour” last year, many of us knew something wasn’t right.
What I didn’t realize was just how serious her health battle had become.
The Grammy-winning singer is now sharing the shocking details of a medical crisis that nearly claimed her life, revealing during an emotional appearance on “Good Morning America” that she underwent a double lung transplant after doctors told her she had only one week to live.

Muni Long Says Her Health Declined During The Tour
While speaking with Robin Roberts, Muni reflected on her decision to join Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine Tour” despite ongoing health challenges related to lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in 2014.
“I should have never taken that tour. But there was so much going on in my life where I had to do it,” she said.
During the tour, Muni became seriously ill and developed pneumonia.
By the time she reached her final performance, she was struggling just to make it through her set.
“I just barely made it. I was only able to do two songs,” she recalled.
After returning home for Thanksgiving, her condition took a frightening turn.

Doctors Told Her She Had One Week To Live
Muni revealed that she woke up in the hospital feeling better than she had in months. Then doctors delivered news that completely changed her life.
“My jaw dropped. Literally,” she said. “I was like, ‘That’s rude.'”
Her medical team explained that her condition was critical and that a transplant was her best chance of survival.
“They were kind of like, ‘This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice or you can get these lungs.'”
Just reading that is enough to make your stomach drop.
Looking back, Muni said she had known for a long time that something wasn’t right.
“Every day I’m, like, spitting in cups and coughing all the time. Trying to take all these medicines to get through the day.”
Even while battling severe symptoms, she continued working, performing, and showing up for fans.
Her Son Helped Her Make The Decision
Muni admitted she initially worried about how the surgery could affect her singing voice.
“The ego and the vanity was just like, ‘But what about my voice? What’s going to happen?'”
But when she thought about her son, whom she shares with ex-husband Raysean Hairston, the decision became clear.
“Quality of life was first. I can’t sing if I’m not here.”
That perspective ultimately gave her the courage to move forward with the life-saving procedure.
Muni Long Says She’s Doing “Fabulous”
Thankfully, Muni’s story didn’t end there.
The singer underwent surgery about six months ago and says she’s doing “fabulous.”
“Tomorrow is my last appointment for all the things. No symptoms. Asymptomatic. No infections. None of that.”
She also revealed that she underwent vocal surgery during her recovery and has another vocal checkup scheduled in August.
According to Muni, her voice has actually improved.
“My voice now is totally different. It’s actually better, should I say?”
While she’s not quite ready to return to the stage, doctors have told her recovery could take anywhere from six months to a year.
A New Chapter For The Grammy-Winning Singer
Muni recently released her new single, “The Riches,” which she said was the last song she recorded before her health complications escalated.
Fans may remember that she announced her departure from “The Boy Is Mine Tour” in November 2025, explaining that her doctors had advised her it was no longer safe to continue performing.
At the time, she thanked Brandy and Monica for the opportunity and promised supporters she would return stronger than ever.
Thankfully, Muni Long is on the other side of one of the toughest battles of her life.
Hearing her say she’s symptom-free after being told she had just one week to live is nothing short of remarkable.
I’m wishing her continued healing and can’t wait to see what this next chapter looks like for her.
