Class is back in session this fall! ABC has announced that “Abbott Elementary” Season 2 will premiere on September 21.
The hit series created by and starring Quinta Brunson is a workplace comedy following a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal —as they navigate the Philadelphia public school system.
Despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life, and though these incredible public servants may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.
“Abbott Elementary” stars Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.
The first season was an instant hit and the series has garnered seven Emmy nominations and Quinta has made history as the first Black woman to earn three nominations in comedy categories in the same year.
Details about what we can expect from the new season are still under wraps, but the cast recently told ELLE magazine what they would like to see for their characters.
Quinta Brunson wants to take more field trips, literally and figuratively, outside of the Abbott Elementary halls.
Sheryl Lee Ralph wants Barbara to start a choir in the vein of Sister Act 2.
Lisa Ann Walter wants the crew to travel to a teaching convention, except “they can’t afford an expensive one, so it’s, like, Atlantic City.”
Tyler James Williams hopes for more will-they, won’t-they romance from Gregory and Janine: “[Gregory’s] got to grow a lot before he’s ready for a relationship, period, let alone with Janine. However, we can see, from the outside point of view, how if they do the work, they could really have something special.”
