Emmy Award-winner Rome Flynn (“With Love,” “How To Get Away With Murder“) is strapping on his gangster boots and heading to Harlem.
Flynn is set to recur in the MGM+ series “Godfather of Harlem” for Season 4, and things are about to get seriously intense.
Flynn will be stepping into the stylish yet dangerous shoes of real-life gangster Frank Lucas.
According to MGM+, Lucas is “a country boy from North Carolina who ventured to Harlem and, after initial friction with gangster Bumpy Johnson (played by the formidable Forest Whitaker), eventually rose to become Bumpy’s fierce defender and right-hand man.”
You might recall Denzel Washington‘s portrayal of Lucas in American Gangster, but this series is rolling back the clock by a decade to show how it all began.
A Gangster’s Tale With A Star-Studded Cast
Created by Chris Brancato (“Narcos,” “Hotel Cocaine“) and the late Paul Eckstein, “Godfather of Harlem” spins a tale inspired by the infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson.
The series kicks off in the early 1960s, with Johnson returning to a crumbling Harlem after an 11-year prison stint.
Season 4 promises more bloody battles for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, along with the rise of Flynn’s character, Frank Lucas, as a new rival.
But it’s not just mob wars on the horizon.
Bumpy must also navigate the aftermath of Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death and deal with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.
The stakes have never been higher.
Rome Flynn: The Right Man for the Job
“When I saw Rome’s audition, I immediately knew we’d found our man – equal parts charming and ruthless, savvy and suave. Rome is a wonderful actor who can go toe-to-toe with Forest Whitaker and our other great performers,” said Brancato in a statement to Deadline.
That’s high praise, especially when you’re set to share the screen with acting heavyweight Forest Whitaker.
Flynn himself is over the moon about joining the cast.
“I’m filled with gratitude! Thrilled to be a part of the Godfather of Harlem universe and breathe new life into the legend of Frank Lucas. I have so much admiration for Forest Whitaker. Working opposite him, being led by the brilliant creator Chris Brancato, is truly a gift. An actor’s dream,” Flynn shared.
A Stellar Career Leading to Harlem
Flynn is fresh off a fiery stint on NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” where he played firefighter Derrick Gibson in Season 12.
Before blazing through the Windy City, he charmed audiences in Gloria Calderon Kellett’s Prime Video series “With Love” as Santiago Zayas.
And let’s not forget his role in the Paramount+ film, Fantasy Football, where he teamed up with Omari Hardwick and Kelly Rowland.
Of course, many fans will remember Flynn for his award-winning work on CBS’s “The Bold and the Beautiful,” which earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series in 2018.
He also captivated viewers as Gabriel Maddox in ABC’s “How To Get Away with Murder,” acting alongside the legendary Viola Davis.
Flynn’s TV credits are as varied as they are impressive, including appearances in Netflix’s “Raising Dion” and “Dear White People,” CBS’s “NCIS: New Orleans” and “MacGyver,” as well as VH1’s “Drumline: A New Beat.”
This guy’s been everywhere and done just about everything—now he’s bringing his A-game to Harlem.
