The documentary premieres on Tuesday, October 15, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, with part two airing on Wednesday, October 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Both episodes will be available to stream on Max starting October 15.

The Unfolding of a Killer’s Story

I’m Not A Monster: The Lois Riess Murders” dives into the unsettling events that began in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, where Lois Riess, a seemingly ordinary wife, mother, and grandmother, killed her husband, David Riess.

Lois then fled, embarking on a cross-country crime spree that culminated in a second murder and a nationwide manhunt.

Lois Riess sits down for the first time to tell her side of the story, revealing a dark family history marked by emotional abuse, gambling addiction, and psychological turmoil.

Her interview forms the core of this documentary, shedding light on how an unassuming grandmother transformed into a cold-blooded killer.

Despite her claims of emotional abuse, Riess fails to justify the meticulous planning behind her spree, which included fraud, identity theft, and calculated acts of violence.

A Deeper Look into Lois Riess’ Mind

Through interviews with family members, friends, law enforcement, and an addiction specialist, director Erin Lee Carr uncovers Lois’s troubled past.

The series paints a complex portrait of a woman grappling with mental health issues, addiction, and strained relationships, culminating in a disturbing series of events.

Carr’s investigation not only explores Lois’s actions but also raises questions about accountability and the deep-rooted effects of family dysfunction.

Episode Breakdown

  • Part One (Airing October 15): The Riess family appears normal on the surface until David’s body is discovered. Lois’s actions in the days that follow, combined with a disturbing psychological profile, hint at a calculated killer lurking beneath her grandmotherly facade.
  • Part Two (Airing October 16): As the hunt for Lois heats up following the murder of Pamela Hutchinson in Florida, a nationwide manhunt ensues. Lois is eventually apprehended in Texas, though her demeanor remains calm, and she claims to have no recollection of her sinister spree.
