Legendary actress Marla Gibbs is honoring her dear friend and longtime “227” co-star Hal Williams following his passing at the age of 91.
Williams, whose memorable career included beloved roles on “Sanford and Son” and “227,” passed away on July 15, leaving behind a television legacy that spans more than five decades.
On Instagram, Ms. Gibbs reflected on their decades of friendship, sharing memories that reached far beyond their years as TV husband and wife.
Marla Gibbs Remembers Her Friend Hal Williams
Ms. Gibbs revealed that her friendship with Williams began long before they starred together on “227.”
She recalled working with him during the original stage production at Crossroads Theater, where her daughter Angela and her partner, Shay Wafer, were producers.
According to Marla Gibbs, Williams stepped in wherever he was needed, even securing donated theater seats and organizing the seating chart because he believed in supporting young artists.
She remembered him as a generous man who freely shared his time, talent, and heart with others.
When “227” was being developed for television, Marla Gibbs said she insisted her character, Mary Jenkins, have a husband.
That decision led to Hal Williams joining the cast as Lester Jenkins, creating one of television’s most beloved Black families alongside Regina King.
A Friendship That Lasted A Lifetime
While millions of viewers loved Mary and Lester’s on-screen relationship, Gibbs said their real-life friendship meant even more.
She shared that Mr. Williams never stopped checking on her after “227” ended, and the two spoke just a couple of weeks ago.
They laughed together like they always had and still called each other “Mary” and “Lester” after all these years.
Ms. Gibbs said she never imagined that conversation would be their last.
She ended her tribute by thanking Hal Williams for his kindness, friendship, and the joy he brought to so many lives. She also offered prayers for his family and everyone who loved him before wishing her dear friend a peaceful rest.
