‘Crime 101’ Movie Review: A Slow Burn That’s Worth The Wait

If a crockpot were a movie, it would be Crime 101.” And I mean that in the best way.

From the moment I saw the cast list, I was sold.

Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and more in one film? Say less. I was ready to swipe my card.

But instead of a flashy, high-speed heist thriller, Crime 101 takes its time and lets the story simmer.

By the end, I understood exactly why.

What To Know About “Crime 101”

• Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Nolte
• Director/Writer: Bart Layton
• Based On: Don Winslow’s novella
• Genre: Crime thriller, slow burn
• Setting: Los Angeles
• The Hook: A master jewel thief, a disillusioned broker, and a relentless detective on a collision course

The Story And Setting Pull You In

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, the film follows an elusive jewel thief, played by Chris Hemsworth, whose string of heists along the 101 freeway has law enforcement scrambling.

When he lines up the score of a lifetime, his path crosses with Halle Berry’s character, a disillusioned insurance broker at a personal and professional crossroads.

Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo steps in as the relentless detective who believes he’s cracked the pattern and is closing in.

As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted starts to blur, and each character is forced to face life-defining choices.

Cinematically, this movie feels like a love letter to Los Angeles.

The POV shots and moody visuals really pulled me into the world. The city is not just a backdrop. It is part of the story.

Performances That Make It Worthwhile

Chris Hemsworth brings a cool, controlled presence to the thief.

Halle Berry delivers vulnerability and quiet strength as a woman who feels pushed aside by her firm.

Mark Ruffalo is so believable as a detective that I’m convinced he could solve a case in real life if needed.

And I have to mention Barry Keoghan. His energy adds an unpredictable spark that keeps you on your toes.

Now let me keep it real. If you walk in expecting nonstop action and wild chases, you may need to reset your expectations.

This is not a pressure cooker. It is a slow and steady burn. But it never lost my attention.

That third act really delivers, and by the time the credits rolled, I wanted more.

If you enjoy character-driven crime dramas that build tension and pay off patiently, Crime 101 is worth your time.
