The world is mourning the loss of Rev. Jesse Jackson, one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time.
The longtime activist, Baptist minister, and two-time presidential candidate passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the age of 84, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mehcad Brooks once said some people “handle the transition like a king,” and for many, that sentiment feels fitting here.
Rev. Jackson’s life was rooted in service, faith, and an unshakable commitment to justice.
A Life Dedicated To Justice And Equality
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Rev. Jackson rose to national prominence during the civil rights movement, working alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and becoming a powerful voice for voting rights, economic equality, and human dignity.
His activism spanned decades and included historic runs for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, campaigns that expanded political participation and inspired millions.
In a heartfelt statement, his family shared:
Our father was a servant leader not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.
We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family.
His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.
Rev. Jackson had been living for years with serious health challenges, including Parkinson’s disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.
Still, his impact and voice never faded from the national conversation.
Rev. Al Sharpton Pays Tribute
Rev. Al Sharpton, who often called Jackson a mentor, shared deeply personal words about the man who helped shape his life and career:
He was a consequential and transformative leader who changed this nation and the world.
He kept the dream alive and taught young children from broken homes, like me, that we don’t have broken spirits.
He told us we were somebody and made us believe… A giant has gone home.
Those words capture what so many feel right now. Rev. Jesse Jackson did not just speak about hope. He helped people believe they deserved it.
Public observances will be held in Chicago, with celebration of life details to be announced by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and the Jackson family.
My heart goes out to his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched. His work, his faith, and his fight for equality will continue to echo for generations.
Rest in power, Rev. Jesse Jackson. Your legacy lives on.
