Amar’e Stoudemire took to social media to release a statement after he was arrested over the weekend for allegedly punching his teenage daughter in the face.
The 40-year-old former NBA star, who played for the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks, was arrested early Sunday morning for misdemeanor battery.
Miami-Dade County court records show he was later released on a $1,500 bond with a no-contact order issued.
According to the Miami Herald, which cited the police report, Amar’e confronted his daughter and accused her of being disrespectful to his mother during a phone call.
When the teen denied it, Amar’e Stoudemire allegedly punched her in the face for talking back, leaving her bleeding.
The teen contacted her mother, Amar’e’s ex-wife Alexis Welch, who came to pick up her and her siblings up and then contacted the police.
The report states when officers went to Stoudemire’s home, he told them the teen called her mother “because she was sad because she received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and a liar.”
He then invoked his right to remain silent.
Amar’e took to his Instagram to release the following statement in regard to the incident and his arrest.
Over the last 24 hours, an incident at my home led to my being charged with assaulting my daughter. It is an allegation based on a report that does not square with the facts.
I am of the Jewish faith, today Jewish people all over the world celebrate Hanukkah and hear the story of how we fought wickedness. I believe that ‘whatever is hateful to you, do not do to others.’
As the investigation unfolds, the facts will show the allegations to be groundless as my daughter’s medical condition is not the result of being assaulted by a father who is nearly 7 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds.
I could never see myself assaulting any person, especially my children. I respect, protect, and love my family, particularly my children.
As a father I ask for your grace as we secure our space and privacy.

Sadly, this incident and the news of his arrest came less than 48 hours after Amar’e proudly announced he had graduated from the University of Miami with a master’s degree.
