Frens… Hillman College is officially back in session. Netflix has finally released the first details for the highly anticipated sequel series to “A Different World,” and this already feels like one of the biggest TV moments of the year for Black television fans.
The new series centers on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College while trying to create her own legacy outside of her parents’ iconic shadow.
And yes… Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are both returning.
I’m not even gonna hold you… seeing those names connected to Hillman again just unlocked a whole wave of nostalgia for me.
The sequel series has officially wrapped filming in Atlanta and will premiere on Netflix on September 24 with 10 half-hour episodes.
What The ‘A Different World’ Sequel Is About
The new chapter follows Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, as she navigates life, friendship, love, pressure, and self-discovery at Hillman College.
But unlike her legendary parents, Deborah is described as free-spirited, rebellious, and determined to carve out her own identity on campus.
And honestly? That setup already sounds like the perfect mix of nostalgia and fresh storytelling.
One of the things that made “A Different World” so special was how authentically it captured Black college life, friendships, ambition, culture, and growing pains.
Now, a whole new generation gets to experience that through a modern lens.

And based on the casting alone, this series looks like it’s aiming to balance legacy characters with a fresh new crew that today’s audience can connect with.
Debbie Allen Returns To Hillman
One of the biggest reasons fans are feeling hopeful about this sequel is because Debbie Allen is back as executive producer and will direct multiple episodes, including the premiere.
That matters.
Debbie Allen helped shape the heart and identity of the original series, and she understands exactly why “A Different World” meant so much to so many people.
The original sitcom famously inspired increased enrollment at HBCUs and gave young Black viewers representation that felt intelligent, layered, aspirational, and real.
And honestly? This feels like the perfect time for Hillman College to return.
