Starz Brings ‘Magic City: An American Fantasy’ to TV
Starz has officially acquired “Magic City: An American Fantasy“, a five-part docuseries diving deep into the cultural impact of Magic City—dubbed the “Black Studio 54″—and its undeniable influence on hip-hop.
Created and executive produced by Cole Brown, the series is set to premiere this summer.
A Star-Studded Production Team
“Magic City: An American Fantasy” boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers, including rap superstar Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, legendary music mogul Jermaine Dupri, and Jami Gertz, majority owner of the Atlanta Hawks.
Additional executive producers include showrunner Bayan Joonam, Devin Amar, and Alex Kaplan.
The docuseries is directed by Charles Todd and was produced by Scheme Engine—a BIPOC-owned studio known for championing underrepresented voices—alongside Ashley Brooke and Marlowe Blue.
Originally premiering at SXSW 2023, the series is now getting a nationwide rollout via Starz.
Inside The Legacy Of Magic City
For decades, Magic City has been more than just a strip club—it’s been a cultural powerhouse.
The docuseries will explore how the club became a launchpad for hip-hop heavyweights and a gathering spot for high-profile celebrities like 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi.
From the artists and dancers to the behind-the-scenes power players, “Magic City: An American Fantasy” tells the full story of how this iconic venue shaped the music industry and nightlife scene.
At the heart of the docuseries is Magic City’s enigmatic founder, Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney.
The series offers exclusive insights into his vision, business acumen, and the women who helped shape Magic City’s mystique into what it is today.
Why Starz Is The Perfect Home For This Docuseries
Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz, shared her excitement about the acquisition:
‘Magic City: An American Fantasy’ is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture.
The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to Starz’s slate of adult, culture-driving shows.
The series also aligns with two of Starz’s biggest hits—”BMF” and “P-Valley.”
“BMF” chronicles the rise of the Black Mafia Family, a drug cartel with strong ties to Magic City, while “P-Valley” follows the lives of dancers at a Southern strip club.
The connection between these shows and “Magic City: An American Fantasy” makes Starz an ideal platform for the docuseries.
Beyond Entertainment: Magic City’s Political Moment
Magic City isn’t just about music and nightlife—it’s played a role in real-world politics, too.
In 2020, former Georgia Governor Stacey Abrams made headlines when she chose the club as the location for her get-out-the-vote announcement, recognizing its influence within the Black community.
With its deep history, high-profile connections, and exclusive behind-the-scenes access, “Magic City: An American Fantasy” is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of hip-hop, nightlife culture, and compelling storytelling.
