What if a group of high school students got closer to solving a decades-old cold case than anyone else? That’s the story behind Prime Video‘s upcoming true crime docuseries “Murder 101.”

The three-part series follows a Tennessee sociology class as they investigate the infamous Redhead Murders, uncover new leads, and bring renewed attention to victims whose stories have long been forgotten.

All three episodes premiere on Prime Video on July 13, 2026.

A Classroom Project Becomes A Real Investigation

Set in Elizabethton, Tennessee, “Murder 101” follows sociology teacher Alex Campbell and his students at Elizabethton High School as they take a fresh look at the Redhead Murders, a string of unsolved killings that once made headlines across the South.

What begins as a classroom assignment quickly turns into a real investigation.

As the students dig deeper, they uncover overlooked clues, develop new leads, and help shine a light on victims who were nearly forgotten.

Along the way, they learn that seeking justice is about more than solving a mystery.

It’s also about making sure the people at the center of these cases are remembered.

“Murder 101” Earned Early Buzz At Sundance

The first episode of “Murder 101” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as part of the Nonfiction Pilot Showcase.

Director Stacey Lee explained why the story resonated with her:

“At its heart, Murder 101 is a story about what happens when someone believes young people are capable of extraordinary things.”

Lee continued:

“Mr. Campbell didn’t just create a class; he created a space where students could think critically, engage deeply, and contribute to something bigger than themselves. The power of a great teacher isn’t just what they teach you; it’s how they change the way you see yourself.”

As someone who enjoys a good true crime documentary, I have to admit this one has my attention.

The idea of students helping breathe new life into a cold case is a fascinating angle, and I’m curious to see where their investigation leads.
