Prime Video’s Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association is a new four-part docuseries exploring the rise and fall of the ABA, and how its influence helped shape modern basketball as we know it today.

Prime Video has announced a February 12 release date and revealed the key art for the upcoming series, which will premiere exclusively on the platform in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide as part of the Prime membership.

Directed by Kenan Kamwana Holley, “Soul Power” is being described as the definitive story and first docuseries dedicated to the American Basketball Association.

The series chronicles the ABA’s bold launch in 1967 and follows how a collection of franchises, many of which later relocated or folded, challenged the NBA on and off the court for nine intense seasons.

Even though the league was short-lived, the impact was permanent.

The docuseries explores how the ABA helped introduce game-changing elements we now associate with professional basketball, including the 3-point shot, the All-Star Game slam dunk competition, and the addition of former ABA franchises like the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs into the NBA.

It also highlights how the ABA contributed to empowering women to take a more substantial role in the business side of sports.

Soul Power” also revisits the rise of superstar players and influential contributors who defined that era, including Julius ErvingMoses MaloneSpencer HaywoodGeorge GervinRick Barry, and George Karl.

And with 2026 marking the 50th anniversary of the ABA’s merger with the NBA, the timing feels especially meaningful for longtime fans and newer audiences who may not realize just how much of today’s game was built on ABA innovation.

“The ABA wasn’t just a league, it was a movement,” said ABA legend and executive producer Julius “Dr. J” Erving. “It gave players freedom, creativity, and opportunity at a time when none of that was guaranteed.”

Presented by Prime Video Sports, the docuseries is executive produced by CommonJulius “Dr. J” ErvingTodd LiebermanCoach George Karl, and Kenan Kamwana Holley, with support from Scott Tarter and the Dropping Dimes Foundation.

The project is a co-production from Prime Video Sports, Truth+Media, Hidden Pictures, and Holley Films.
