MGM+ just dropped a first look at its upcoming heartfelt comedy series “American Classic,” and if you love messy family dynamics, small-town drama, and theater folks behaving… like theater folks, this one is about to be your new obsession.
Starring Academy Award-winner Kevin Kline as Broadway star Richard Bean, Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning Laura Linney, and SAG Award-nominated Jon Tenney, the series premieres Sunday, March 1, 2026, with two episodes.

After that, MGM+ will roll out new episodes weekly, leading up to the season finale on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
The story follows Richard after a spectacular public meltdown sends him running back home to the family theater where he first discovered his “brilliance.”
But the return is anything but peaceful.
Richard’s behavior sparks chaos for the people closest to him, including his ex-girlfriend, who’s now the town’s mayor and married to his brother, plus his beloved niece who dreams of a life onstage.
As old flames reignite and long-buried secrets surface, Richard is forced to face the fallout of the fame and glamour he chose over the family and town he left behind.

The cast is stacked, too. Tony Shalhoub guest stars as Alvy, Richard’s longtime New York agent and possibly his only friend.
Tony Award-winners Aaron Tveit and Stephen Spinella also join the lineup, with Spinella playing influential theater critic Xander, and Tveit portraying Troy, Xander’s fiercely protective partner.
Additional cast includes Len Cariou, Jane Alexander, Jessica Hecht, Nell Verlaque, Billy Carter, Elise Kibler, Ajay Friese, and Mark Linn-Baker.
Co-created by Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin, “American Classic” is shaping up to be a funny, sharp, and surprisingly emotional ride.
