Report: Sherrone Moore Fired At Michigan And Held In Jail During Assault Investigation

Fired Michigan coach Sherrone Moore is jailed during an assault investigation after the university confirmed evidence of an inappropriate staff relationship.

Michigan football is going through it again. Sherrone Moore, once praised as the next rising star in college coaching, is now sitting in the Washtenaw County Jail while police investigate what led to his arrest just hours after the university cut ties with him for violating school policy.

Authorities have not released specifics about the arrest, but Pittsfield Township police confirmed that officers responded to an alleged assault Wednesday night and took someone into custody.

They did not initially name the suspect, but the department later issued an updated statement acknowledging that the person being held is scheduled for arraignment on Friday.

Media outlets quickly connected the dots to Moore.

Michigan announced Moore’s firing earlier the same day, revealing that the 39 year old coach had been terminated for cause after the school verified evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Athletic director Warde Manuel called the behavior a clear violation of university policy.

Moore, who is married with three young daughters, has not publicly commented on the situation.

This marks a dramatic fall for a coach who was once positioned as the future of the program.

After leading the Wolverines to an 8 and 5 record in his debut season and a 9 and 3 finish this year, Moore was thought to be solidifying his place following Michigan’s national championship run in January 2024.

His career, however, has been overshadowed by NCAA issues connected to the program’s sign stealing scandal.

Moore served multiple suspensions, including a two-game self-imposed penalty and a third game added by the NCAA that would have kept him sidelined for the 2026 opener.

The fallout also affects Michigan’s immediate future.

With the Wolverines gearing up to face No. 14 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, Biff Poggi will step in as interim coach.

Poggi previously filled in earlier this season during Moore’s suspension.

Financially, the university will not owe Moore the remaining years on his five year, five point five million dollar annual contract because he was fired for cause.

The program now finds itself searching for a new leader for the third time in four years, right after a coaching carousel that included Lane Kiffin leaving Mississippi for LSU.

Moore’s connection to the sign stealing saga continues to raise eyebrows.

Investigators discovered he had deleted an entire 52 message text thread with former staffer Connor Stalions, the central figure in the controversy.

Those messages were later recovered and shared with the NCAA.

Before all of this, Moore had been seen as a hard working, rising coach who climbed the ranks after playing at Butler County Community College and under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma.

He began his coaching career at Louisville, spent time at Central Michigan, and was hired by Jim Harbaugh in 2018.

Within a few years he was co offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and eventually interim head coach during Michigan’s championship season.

College football has seen similar scandals before, from Mel Tucker’s firing at Michigan State in 2023 to Bobby Petrino’s public downfall in 2012.

Still, this one stings for a Michigan program that has fought to shake off controversy.

I’ll keep an eye on updates as more details are released.
