The opulent world of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” is about to get a major infusion of talent with the casting of legendary actress Phylicia Rashad for its upcoming third season.Â
Rashad, a two-time Tony Award winner and beloved star of “The Cosby Show,” is set to portray Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland, a fascinating new character poised to stir things up amongst New York’s high society in the 1880s.
Described as a woman “from a prominent family with exacting standards for her social group and her son,” Mrs. Kirkland promises to be a force to be reckoned with.Â
But Mrs. Kirkland won’t be navigating this complex social landscape alone.Â
Joining Rashad is Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell (“Kiss Me, Kate“) who will portray her husband, Frederick Kirkland.Â
Described as the pastor of a “prominent Black church in the community,” Mr. Kirkland’s presence adds another layer of intrigue to the story.
The arrival of the Kirklands is sure to create a ripple effect throughout the series, which explores the clash between old money and new, the fight for social status, and the ever-widening gap between the classes.Â
Phylicia Rashad, known for her powerful performances and captivating screen presence, is perfectly suited to portray a woman who commands respect and wields influence.
Fans can also expect to see sparks fly between Mrs. Kirkland and her on-screen son, Dr. William Kirkland, played by Tony nominee Jordan Donica (“Camelot”).Â
The dynamic between this formidable mother and her ambitious son promises to be a compelling subplot throughout the season.
Rashad joins a talented ensemble cast that includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski.
With the addition of these powerhouse actors, Season 3 of “The Gilded Age” promises to be its most glittering yet.
So, buckle up for a return to the opulent ballrooms, ruthless social maneuvering, and the ever-present struggle for power in New York’s Gilded Age.Â
With Phylicia Rashad at the helm, Season 3 is sure to be a must-watch for fans of the show and period dramas in general.
