Mary J. Blige is deepening her creative partnership with Lifetime, and this time it comes with even more heart, history, and healing.
The music icon has extended her deal with Lifetime to include three new original films inspired by her music, building on the success of her previous collaborations with the network.
The first project under this expanded agreement is officially titled “Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy,” named after her 1994 classic from the My Life album.
And just like the song, the story is rooted in emotional truth.
What “Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy” Is About
The film stars Tisha Campbell as Val, a devoted wife and stay-at-home mom whose world begins to shift when her youngest child leaves for college.
With an empty nest, growing loneliness, and emotional distance from her husband Ross, played by Russell Hornsby, Val starts questioning not only her marriage but the version of herself she has quietly set aside.
A spontaneous trip to New Orleans to support her pregnant daughter Kayla, portrayed by Zing Ashford, becomes a turning point.
While there, Val meets Peter Mosley, a charismatic photographer played by Mekhi Phifer, who sees her in ways she has forgotten to see herself.
As long-buried dreams and artistic passions resurface, Val must confront a question that feels deeply relatable.
Is it ever too late to choose yourself and the love you truly deserve?
Gabourey Sidibe Makes Her Directorial Debut

“Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy” marks the directorial debut of Gabourey Sidibe, whose voice and perspective feel perfectly aligned with the film’s emotional core.
The screenplay was written by Cameron J. Ross, weaving themes of vulnerability, rediscovery, and self-worth that mirror the spirit of Mary’s music.
A Proven Formula For Lifetime Success
This extended deal follows strong performance from Mary’s previous Lifetime movies inspired by her songs, including “Real Love,” “Strength of a Woman,” and “Family Affair.”
According to Nielsen, those films collectively reached more than 6.1 million total viewers on linear television, making it clear why Lifetime was eager to expand the partnership.
