Mary J. Blige just walked away with a decisive legal victory.
A New York judge has officially dismissed the lawsuit filed against the Grammy-winning icon by her former stylist and onetime close friend, Misa Hylton.
The ruling was entered Tuesday after Misa failed to oppose Mary J.’s motion to dismiss, a misstep the court said amounted to abandoning her claims altogether.
Judge Dismisses Mary J. Blige Lawsuit Filed By Misa Hylton
In a pointed ruling, Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond made it clear the court was not impressed.
She stated that Misa Hylton’s failure to respond “constitutes the abandonment” of her allegations and issued a written warning to Misa and her legal team.
While the judge stopped short of imposing sanctions, her message was unmistakable.
The court does not condone lawsuits seeking millions in damages based on inflammatory accusations, only for those claims to be dropped once a motion to dismiss and potential sanctions enter the picture.
Consider this a legal side-eye in written form.
Mary J. Blige And Misa Hylton’s Long History
Before lawyers got involved, Mary J. and Misa shared real history.
Misa, an up-and-coming stylist at the time, worked closely with Mary J. Blige in the early 1990s, helping shape her image during the rise of her career.
That included styling Mary J. during the promotion of her 1992 breakout album “What’s the 411?”.
The professional relationship eventually turned into a friendship, one that clearly did not survive this legal battle.
Whatever goodwill existed between Mary J. and Misa Hylton appeared to end when Misa filed her lawsuit on April 29.
Why Misa Hylton Accused Mary J. Blige Of Poaching Vado
At the center of the lawsuit was Vado, a Harlem rapper managed by Misa at the time.
In her complaint, Misa Hylton accused Mary J. Blige of attempting to “coerce” the artist into terminating his management agreement so he could move under Mary J.’s company, Beautiful Life Productions, where he already had a recording contract.
Misa also alleged that she was intentionally excluded from meetings with Vado, claiming those discussions took place in “intimate and inappropriate” settings such as late-night yacht outings and hotel rooms.
She further claimed the defendants deliberately sabotaged her professional relationship with the rapper.
Mary J. Blige’s Legal Team Calls Lawsuit Baseless
Mary J.’s attorneys were not subtle in their response.
In the motion to dismiss, Blige’s legal team argued that Misa had no viable case, asserting that M.I.S.A. Management was not a valid New York corporation and that Misa Hylton was not a licensed talent agent as required by law.
They also alleged the lawsuit was filed with the sole purpose of harassing Mary J. and causing reputational harm, pointing to what they described as Misa’s personal animus toward the singer.
Vado’s Claims Against Mary J. Blige Explained
Vado, whose legal name is Teeyon Winfree, was listed as a co-plaintiff in the lawsuit.
He alleged that Mary J. Blige refused to release his music and owed him at least $5 million for breach of contract.
According to Mary J.’s legal team, that claim did not hold up either.
Before filing the motion to dismiss, Blige’s attorneys, including Sarah M. Matz and high-profile music industry litigator Lisa Moore, sent a letter demanding the immediate withdrawal of what they described as “baseless” claims.
The letter stated that a review of state records showed M.I.S.A. Management was not a duly organized corporation, undermining the core legal arguments in the case.
Mary J. Blige’s Lawyers Say Vado Delayed His Own Music
The letter also pushed back on Winfree’s allegations, claiming delays in his music releases were the result of his own actions.
According to Mary J. Blige’s legal team, the rapper failed to deliver required consents and clearances despite multiple requests.
They further alleged that Misa had already been paid more than she was owed after taking a commission on over $300,000 paid to Winfree, money that was recoupable under his recording contract.
The letter even included an alleged text message from Winfree in which he reportedly mentioned he was considering firing Misa Hylton on his own.
Misa Hylton Breaks Silence After Mary J. Blige Lawsuit Dismissed
After a New York judge dismissed the lawsuit against Mary J. Blige, Misa Hylton shared a brief but reflective public statement addressing the emotional toll of the legal dispute and her decision to move forward.
While she did not mention Mary J. by name, Misa described the situation as deeply personal and rooted in blurred lines between friendship and business.
“Over the years, there have been people very close to me who have hurt me deeply, and I chose not to pursue them even when I could have, and maybe should have,” she wrote. “That reflection led me to ask myself why I would choose a different path for someone I once called my sister.”
Misa acknowledged that mixing family, friendship, and business can lead to painful consequences, even when intentions are good.
“Through this experience, I learned that mixing family, friendship, and business is not always wise,” she continued. “While I don’t agree with everything that was done, I chose peace.”
In the closing of her statement, Misa Hylton addressed the personal impact the ordeal had on her mental health.
“This entire ordeal has taken a significant toll on my mental health and caused me to reflect deeply on life, relationships, and their true purpose,” she wrote. “I pray for healing for all of us.”
The statement marks Misa’s first public response since the court dismissed her claims against Mary J. Blige, offering a measured note of closure as the legal chapter comes to an end.
