One year after Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s passing, his widow, Tenisha Warner, is opening up about life after losing her husband while navigating an estate lawsuit she says she never wanted to file.
During a “CBS Mornings” interview that aired before the legal battle became public, Tenisha shared how grief has reshaped her life and why her 9-year-old daughter remains her biggest priority.
She said her emotional capacity is often limited, so whatever she has to give goes to her daughter first, then herself.
“There’s no moving on,” Tenisha said. “For us, we’re his wife and child.”
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Widow Is Focused On Their Daughter
Tenisha said that after Malcolm-Jamal’s accidental drowning in Costa Rica in July 2025, her only concern was making sure she could continue being the mother their daughter needed.
That mission also inspired her to launch the Warner Family Foundation and River & Ember, an organization that helps parents support children through grief and difficult emotions.
Why Tenisha Warner Filed An Estate Lawsuit
Shortly after the interview, Tenisha filed a lawsuit against Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother, Pamela Warner, who serves as trustee of the Warner Family Trust.
According to the complaint, Tenisha is seeking approximately $1.27 million she says is owed under her premarital agreement with Malcolm-Jamal and other financial obligations he agreed to fulfill.
In a statement, Tenisha said she spent the past year trying to settle the estate privately while honoring her husband’s wishes.
She also revealed Malcolm-Jamal intended to replace an estate plan created in 1996, years before they met and before they had their daughter, but passed away before those changes could be finalized.
“I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider,” she said. “Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights before any potential statute of limitations expired.”

A Family Still Mourning
When Gayle King asked whether she still speaks with Malcolm-Jamal’s mother, Tenisha didn’t directly answer.
Instead, she acknowledged that everyone who loved Malcolm-Jamal is grieving and said her focus remains on caring for her daughter.
Meanwhile, Pamela Warner marked the first anniversary of her son’s passing with an emotional Instagram tribute, reflecting on grief, healing, and the lessons she’s learned over the past year.
As the estate case moves forward, one thing is clear: this family is still grieving the loss of Malcolm-Jamal Warner while working through an incredibly painful chapter.
