Karen Huger Faces Sentencing in Montgomery County Court

Karen Huger, known as the “Grand Dame” of “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” was back in a Montgomery County Circuit Court on Wednesday, February 26.

The reality star was sentenced to two years in prison, with one year suspended, as part of her ongoing DUI case.

Karen, 61, will also serve five years of probation. Accompanied by her husband, Ray Huger, she appeared in court dressed in all black.

She now has 30 days to appeal the judge’s ruling and 90 days to request reconsideration of her sentence.

As she was taken into custody, Huger reportedly reassured her husband, saying, “You will be alright,” and “God’s got you.”

The Incident That Led to Huger’s Arrest

Huger’s legal troubles began in March 2024, when she crashed her vehicle into a street sign just three miles from her home.

Released body cam footage from the scene showed Huger visibly intoxicated, stumbling, slurring her words, and referencing “Housewives” executive Andy Cohen and even Abraham Lincoln during her interaction with police.

She admitted to drinking “a couple of beers.”

She was formally charged with DUI, DWI, negligent driving, reckless driving, speeding, and driving with a suspended registration.

While a jury found her guilty on most charges in December, she was acquitted of reckless driving.

Karen Huger’s Path to Recovery

In January 2025, Karen voluntarily entered a private rehabilitation facility in Florida to address her alcohol consumption and prescription medication use.

The decision led to her missing the RHOP Season 9 reunion taping.

However, she made a virtual appearance through two recorded videos—one filmed on the day of her sentencing and another after checking into rehab.

In the video, Karen Huger dismissed claims of alcoholism, stating, “No, I’m not an alcoholic, let’s be clear,” but urged fans to learn from her mistakes.

Reflecting on her sentencing, she admitted, “This is very frightening, but I accept full responsibility for everything that went on with my car accident.”

Her RHOP costar Gizelle Bryant reacted emotionally to Huger’s statement, expressing her hope that the reality star was taking this as a serious wake-up call.

“My prayer has always been, ‘She needs to get some help,’” Bryant said.

Huger’s recent DUI case isn’t her first run-in with the law regarding alcohol-related offenses.

Court records indicate that between 2006 and 2011, she faced three previous cases, including convictions for driving under the influence and driving while impaired.

Her attorney, David Martella, has since revealed that the legal proceedings were a “wake-up call” for Huger.

Since returning from treatment, she has reportedly been actively participating in Alcoholics Anonymous.

As Karen Huger faces this new chapter, it remains to be seen how the RHOP star will navigate both her legal obligations and personal growth.

Will the “Grand Dame” emerge stronger than ever or continue to be a Grand Drunk?

Fans and “Real Housewives of Potomac” enthusiasts will undoubtedly be watching closely.

I wish her the best.
