Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is heading back to jail after violating the terms of his probation connected to the high-speed Dallas crash that left multiple people injured in 2024.
According to the Texas State Attorney’s Office, Rice tested positive for THC and was ordered to immediately begin serving the 30-day jail sentence that had previously been deferred as part of his plea agreement.
What Happened With Rashee Rice?
On Tuesday, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Rice was taken into custody after testing positive for marijuana while on probation.
“Mr. Rice was taken into custody today in the 194th Judicial District Court for testing positive for THC and ordered to serve the 30 days that he had previously been ordered to serve at a later time,” the DA’s office said in a statement.
Jail records show Rice was booked into the Dallas County jail at approximately 1:25 p.m. ET.
He is expected to remain behind bars until June 16.
The timing means Rice will likely miss the Kansas City Chiefs’ voluntary offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp.
The Chiefs declined to comment on the situation, and Rice’s attorney had not publicly responded at the time of this writing.
The Dallas Highway Crash That Changed Everything
Back in March 2024, authorities said Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at nearly 119 mph on North Central Expressway in Dallas when the vehicle became involved in a devastating multicar crash.
Police said Rice and former SMU teammate Theodore Knox fled the scene on foot without checking on the injured victims.
The crash was captured on video and quickly spread across social media and news outlets.
Less than two weeks later, Rice publicly accepted responsibility for the incident and later pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges:
- Collision involving serious bodily injury
- Racing on a highway causing bodily injury
As part of the plea agreement, Rice received deferred adjudication and five years of probation.
If he had successfully completed probation, the case would have eventually been dismissed.
NFL Suspension Already Impacted Rashee Rice’s Career
The fallout from the crash already cost Rice significant time on the field.
The NFL suspended the Chiefs receiver six games last season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Meanwhile, Theodore Knox also pleaded guilty in 2025 and received a similar sentence of 30 days in jail and five years of probation.
A Texas court later issued a default judgment ordering Knox to pay more than $2.8 million related to the crash.
Now, with Rice back in custody, many NFL fans are once again questioning whether the talented young receiver can fully get his career back on track.
Will This Impact The Chiefs’ Season?
While Rice is expected to be released before the NFL season begins, his absence during offseason practices could still impact team chemistry and preparation heading into the new season.
The bigger question now is whether this marks the end of the controversy surrounding Rice or just another chapter in an already troubled situation.
