If you thought you knew Brandy’s story, her memoir “Phases” is opening up a conversation that’s long overdue.

In “Phases,” Brandy reflects on her past relationship with Wanya Morris, and one detail has people talking the most.

She says she was 16 years old.
He was 22.

And now, she’s telling her story in her own words.

Brandy “Phases” Memoir Reveals A Complicated Relationship

In “Phases,” Brandy shares that her relationship with Wanya Morris began when she was just 16, while he was 22 and already an established star.

She describes a secret relationship filled with sneaking around, hiding the truth from her parents, and navigating emotions she now admits she didn’t fully understand at the time.

“I was in over my head,” she writes, recalling how keeping the relationship hidden became a constant.

Brandy also reveals that she lost her virginity to Wanya Morris, highlighting just how serious and emotionally involved she was at such a young age.

Looking back, she says the warning signs were there all along.

“These are the things that with hindsight you realize are wildly obvious signs of something wrong… neon warning signs that I chose to ignore because I didn’t know what the hell I was doing.”

Two Different Stories Of The Same Relationship

Wanya Morris has previously shared his perspective on their relationship, describing it as something that grew naturally over time.

He says they started as friends and became close, eventually developing an intimate connection.

He also frames the relationship around timing, saying things became romantic “once she turned of age,” while emphasizing that they were both young.

But here’s where the disconnect comes in.

While Brandy clearly states she was 16 when the relationship began, Wanya Morris does not directly mention her age in his account.

That difference in framing is a big part of why this story is hitting so hard right now.

Because we’re not going to act like we forgot this 2014 “Breakfast Club” interview when Wanya said Brandy was “old enough to get it!”

“The Silence Ends Here”

Brandy doesn’t hold back when it comes to how she sees that relationship today.

“I was a child. And he was an adult.”

She also pushes back against the narrative that she was just a young girl with a crush.

“I was not a fast girl with a crush. I was not a dramatic teenager who couldn’t handle rejection… I was a child.”

Brandy says she now believes she was taken advantage of, and she’s no longer carrying the shame tied to that experience.

For her, this moment is about truth, healing, and finally speaking up.

Wanya Morris Explains Why They Broke Up

Wanya Morris has also shared his perspective on how the relationship ended, describing it as something that naturally ran its course.

“We were young… you fall in love… As time progressed, we grew out of each other.”

He added:

“She grew outta me and I grew outta her. Might have grown outta her a little bit faster.”

From his point of view, it was a relationship shaped by youth and timing.

From Brandy’s point of view, it was something far more complex.

Footnote: Adina Howard

Now, some of us may be old enough to remember that Adina Howard was once caught in a love triangle of sorts with Wanya Morris and Brandy.

Adina Howard and Brandy were labelmates at the time, and Wanya Morris reportedly stepped outside of his relationship to see what a “Freak Like Me” was really hitting for, sparking a messy situation behind the scenes.

As you can imagine, that created tension between the two women, and Sylvia Rhone was not about to let that kind of drama disrupt her label’s biggest artists.

Between the fallout and a headline-making interview with Wendy Williams, Adina Howard’s career ultimately took a hit.

Why Brandy’s Story Matters Now

What makes this moment so impactful is the clear contrast between their two accounts.

Wanya Morris describes mentorship, closeness, and young love.

Brandy describes being 16, emotionally vulnerable, and now understanding that experience in a completely different way as an adult.

That gap in perspective is exactly why this conversation is gaining traction.

It speaks to larger conversations about age, power dynamics, and how young women process relationships differently as they grow older.
