It’s with great joy that I report Angela Bassett has finally received her long-overdue and well-deserved Oscar.
The iconic actress, pictured above with her husband, Courtney B. Vance, and their beautiful children, received an honorary Oscar at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 14th Governors Awards.
Oscar-winning actress Regina King, who has the world buzzing over her forthcoming portrayal of Shirley Chisholm, introduced Angela Bassett saying, “Tonight I have the honor of presenting an Academy Award to a national treasure.”
Regina has worked with Angela in classic films like Boyz N the Hood and How Stella Got Her Groove Back and shared that she is “a sister to me.”
“Bottom line: Angela has lived a career for the ages, and I swear, she is ageless… She is artistic excellence embodied in human form,” Regina King said.
Watch the introduction below.
Angela Bassett looked absolutely stunning and was beaming with gratitude.
During her acceptance speech, the Wakanda Forever star said, “I have considered acting my calling and not just my career… to be recognized in this way for what I love doing is truly wonderful, and I am beyond grateful.”
Like the true queen that she is, Angela Bassett poured into other Black actresses in the room saying:
To my fellow Black actresses…fill your hearts with courage and strength because regardless of what you may think, or see, or feel, your contributions do matter.
Take comfort in knowing that your performances have given hope, offered a different perspective, and for others just pure joy in a time of need.
Never allow fear, frustration, or disappointment to get in the way of the blessings that are divinely and deservingly yours. Remember who you are and who our ancestors intended for you to be.
Angela also paid homage to the late Cicely Tyson, her friend, mentor, and the first Black actress to receive an honorary Oscar.
I have had to let it sink in that I am the second Black actress to receive an honorary Academy Award…and I hope that she is smiling from the heavens that I’m able to join her in that circle of recognition.

Congratulations, Queen!
