If you’re looking for a film that feels honest, emotional, and quietly powerful, Ricky might be the one to put on your must-watch list right now.
The official trailer for the 2025 Sundance Award-winning movie has arrived, giving us our first look at a heartfelt story about survival, second chances, and the complicated journey of starting over. Ricky hits theaters March 20, 2026.
A Story About Starting Life Over
Newly released after being locked up in his teens, 30-year-old Ricky is finally stepping into the world as a free man.
But freedom comes with its own challenges.
Ricky is navigating adulthood for the first time while trying to meet parole requirements, find stability, and figure out who he is outside of prison walls.
He’s missed out on so many rites of passage, from learning how to date and build confidence to understanding smartphones and social media etiquette.
It’s a lot to process, and the trailer doesn’t shy away from the emotional weight of it all.
Back in Hartford, Connecticut, Ricky returns to his Caribbean mother’s deeply religious home, where expectations, faith, and family pressure collide with his need to carve out independence.
And when his gift as a barber becomes his path toward employment, it’s clear this is more than a job, it’s his shot at reclaiming his future.
A Breakout Feature Debut With Powerful Performances
Directed by Rashad Frett, with a script by Frett and Lin Que Ayoung, Ricky is described as warm, beautifully textured, and filled with humanity.
Stephan James stars as Ricky alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph as Joanne, his big-hearted but hard-edged parole officer, with Titus Welliver also in the cast.
