When I saw the news about Kara Braxton, my heart just sank.

At only 43 years old, the decorated WNBA champion has passed away, and the loss feels especially heavy because of the legacy she leaves behind, both on and off the court.

On Sunday, February 22, the WNBA shared the heartbreaking announcement on X, writing, “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of 2x WNBA Champion Kara Braxton.”

No cause of death has been shared.

A Champion On And Off The Court

Kara Braxton built a career that so many athletes only dream of.

Over 10 seasons in the WNBA, she played for the Detroit Shock, Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury, and New York Liberty.

She was a force at the University of Georgia, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2002 and later becoming a WNBA All-Star in 2007.

After winning the 2008 championship with the Detroit Shock, she even visited the White House and met then-President Barack Obama the following year.

It was the kind of full-circle moment that speaks to both excellence and impact.

But beyond the stats and titles, she was a mother first.

A Mother’s Love Front And Center

Kara leaves behind two sons, Jelani Thurman and Jream Jackson, along with her husband, Jarvis Jackson, and her twin sister, Kim.

Jelani, who played on the Ohio State football team that won the national championship in 2024, shared deeply emotional tributes to his mom on Instagram.

One video shows Kara leaning down from the stands to hug her son at a game.

That moment says everything about who she was.

Her former teammate Plenette Pierson also shared a moving tribute, writing, “Karebear……….This still feels unreal. I keep replaying memories and conversations because part of me expects to hear your voice again. Losing you hurts in a way words cannot hold.”

She thanked Kara for “showing me what unconditional friendship looks like” and promised to support her sons, calling them her “pride and joy.”

Remembering Kara Braxton

It is easy to focus on championships and accolades, but what stands out most in moments like this is love.

The love of a mother. The love of a friend. The love of a teammate.

Kara Braxton’s impact stretched far beyond basketball.

And judging by the tributes pouring in, she poured just as much into the people around her as she did into the game.

My heart is with her family, her sons, and everyone who loved her.

Let’s honor her legacy together.
