In a heartbreaking incident that has rocked the Brunswick community, 16-month-old Jamal Bryant Jr. tragically died after choking on a piece of watermelon at The Kids Nest Learning Center in coastal Georgia.

Days after the incident, the state agency Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning shut down the daycare center.

Incident Details

According to a filing from Bright from the Start, the agency was informed on Tuesday about the child’s death.

The report states that Jamal Bryant Jr. was not properly supervised while eating a large piece of watermelon as a snack.

The toddler choked on the fruit and subsequently died at a nearby hospital.

Surveillance footage from the daycare revealed that three employees were engaged in conversation with each other instead of monitoring the children under their care.

The video also showed that the employees failed to provide proper first aid.

Instead of performing CPR, which is the standard emergency response, they repeatedly patted the child on the back, an ineffective measure in such a critical situation.

Immediate Response & Investigation

In response to the tragic incident, Bright from the Start issued an emergency closure notice for The Kids Nest Learning Center on Thursday.

This decision comes after a thorough review of the surveillance video and other evidence.

Channel 2 Action News’ sister station, Action News Jax, conducted an investigation into the daycare’s history and discovered a troubling pattern.

Inspection reports reveal several complaints against The Kids Nest Learning Center dating back to 2022.

These complaints include allegations of abuse, improper child supervision, and other violations.

The most recent inspection was completed in April, and the daycare had been threatened with fines at least three times for repeated violations.

Despite these warnings, the center continued to operate until this tragic incident forced its closure.

Community & Family Reactions

The Brunswick community is in shock and mourning over the loss of young Jamal Bryant Jr.

The family, devastated by the sudden and preventable death of their beloved child, is seeking justice and answers.

The daycare’s apparent negligence and history of violations have raised serious concerns about the safety and standards of care at such facilities.

This tragic event underscores the critical importance of vigilant supervision and adherence to safety protocols in childcare settings.

The emergency closure of The Kids Nest Learning Center serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of failing to prioritize the well-being of children.

Bright from the Start and other regulatory bodies are expected to intensify their inspections and oversight of childcare centers across the state to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

The investigation into Jamal Bryant Jr.’s death continues, and it is hoped that the findings will lead to more stringent enforcement of childcare regulations and improved safety measures.

I extend my thoughts, heart, prayers, and sincerest condolences to the Bryant family.
