The Simmons family is mourning the loss of Danny Simmons, the beloved artist, philanthropist, and older brother of Russell Simmons and Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons.
The heartbreaking news was announced Monday, June 15, in a statement shared on social media.
Danny was 72.
“It is with a profound sense of loss that we honor and celebrate the life of Danny Simmons Jr., a beacon of love and creativity. He was not just a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and loving husband; he was a vibrant artist, dedicated supporter of creatives, and a cherished friend,” the family wrote.
The statement continued, “Though he has transitioned from this world, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and artistic brilliance will forever shine brightly in our hearts. The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time.”
For many, Danny Simmons was known as an accomplished artist, author, and advocate for the arts.
But judging by the tributes pouring in from his loved ones, he was so much more than that.
He was a mentor, a source of inspiration, and a constant presence in the lives of those closest to him.
Who Was Danny Simmons?
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Danny Simmons built a remarkable legacy through art, philanthropy, and service.
His work was featured in institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Smithsonian.
He also helped create opportunities for countless young artists through the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which he co-founded alongside his brothers in 1995.
Danny was also a co-creator of HBO’s groundbreaking series “Def Poetry Jam.”
Family Tributes Pour In
Russell Simmons shared an emotional tribute to the brother he called his best friend.
“He was the true artist in the family. Joey and I went into music, him as a poet and rapper, me as a producer, but Danny was the one who created from the deepest place. His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits. He cared deeply about the underserved communities of color and encouraged us to give back.
…he founded the rush arts foundation which he chaired for 32 years Providing art education and support for thousands of young people throughout the years And the rush art gallery provided a place for artists of color to feature their art … many became famous and ‘successful’ While so many others were uplifted for the experiences.
He was the most compassionate of us, always the first to sacrifice, the most honest and loving. Danny was my best friend, we spoke every day. He taught me how to be a better human being and how to be a man.
He is survived by his loyal, loving wife Keia Simmons his son Jamel Simmons his 2 brothers and the whole extended Simmons family Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes ❤️”
Angela Simmons remembered her uncle as one of the people who helped shape her childhood.
“To my Uncle 🙏🏽 My inspiration since a little girl. You were the best Uncle ever.
So many memories that shaped my childhood and who I am today.
Still in shock you aren’t here anymore. But thank you for all the love you poured into me and the family.
So many lives touched by you. Your legacy lives on. I love you Uncle Danny 😢🕊️🙏🏽
God has his angel now. Until we meet again.”
Aoki Lee Simmons shared an especially emotional tribute, writing:
“Uncle Danny was the most compassionate person in this family.
He was the most wonderful teacher, and artist and human.
I can’t believe he’s gone. I’ve never lived on earth without him.”
JoJo Simmons also honored his uncle, writing:
“Sleep easy Uncle Danny. 🕊️🕊️🕊️
The best uncle a nephew can ask for. 🙏🏾
Not gonna lie this one has been hard.”
