Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court following a drug possession case tied to his appearance at the Beach, Please! Festival in July 2024.
The ruling was handed down Thursday by the Constanta Court of Appeal and, according to Romania’s national news agency Agerpres, the decision is final.
Romanian authorities say Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was stopped by police after allegedly smoking cannabis on stage during the festival in Costinesti, a coastal resort in Constanta County.
Prosecutors claimed the rapper was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis and admitted to consuming some of it while performing.
That detail matters because Romania does not play when it comes to drug laws.
Cannabis possession for personal use is criminalized and can carry penalties ranging from fines to prison sentences of up to two years.
What might earn a shrug or a citation elsewhere can quickly turn into a serious charge there.

Earlier this year, a lower court in Constanta County issued Khalifa a criminal fine of 3,600 lei, roughly $830, for illegal possession of dangerous drugs.
Prosecutors were not satisfied with that outcome and appealed the ruling, pushing for a harsher sentence.
The appeals court agreed, resulting in the nine-month jail sentence.
At this time, it remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will seek extradition.
Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and does not reside in Romania, which adds another layer of uncertainty to how, or if, the sentence will be enforced.
The situation has sparked conversation online, especially considering Khalifa’s long-standing association with cannabis culture.
The 38-year-old Pittsburgh native rose to fame with his breakout mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice” and has often leaned into that image throughout his career.
During his Romania performance last summer, he reportedly smoked a large hand-rolled cigarette on stage while performing his hit “Young, Wild & Free.”
The irony is not lost on fans, but Romanian law is not impressed by irony, vibes, or chart success.
As of now, Wiz Khalifa has not publicly commented on the sentence.
Whether this legal chapter ends quietly or escalates into an international standoff remains to be seen.
One thing is clear though.
When performing overseas, knowing the local laws is just as important as knowing the lyrics.
