Apple TV+ unveils “The Big Cigar,” a highly anticipated limited drama series chronicling Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton‘s escape to Cuba, inspired by the monumental magazine article of the same name.
About ‘The Big Cigar’
Premiering globally on May 17 with its first two episodes, subsequent episodes will air every Friday until June 14.
Esteemed actor, producer, and director Don Cheadle takes the helm as director and executive producer for the initial episodes.
Adapted from Joshuah Bearman’s gripping magazine article (known for “Argo”), also serving as an executive producer, “The Big Cigar” unfolds the astonishing true story where Hollywood’s revolutionary spirit meets social revolution.
It’s a thrilling escapade of Black Panther luminary Huey Newton’s FBI escape to Cuba, orchestrated with the aid of famed producer Bert Schneider through an intricately plotted but flawed scheme—centered around a bogus movie production—that’s as unbelievable as it is real.
The Cast
Leading a stellar ensemble cast is André Holland, supported by acclaimed actors including Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, PJ Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman.
Guiding the series as showrunner is NAACP Image Award winner Janine Sherman Barrois (“Claws,” “The Kings of Napa”), with the first episode crafted by Jim Hecht of “Winning Time” fame. Produced under the Warner Bros.
Television banner, Barrois and her Folding Chair Productions oversee the project as part of their overarching deal with the studio. Executive producers include Barrois, Hecht, Bearman, Joshua Davis, and Arthur Spector (“Little America”) through their production company Epic.
