Nikki Giovanni, the legendary poet, professor, and voice of the Black Arts Movement, has died at 81.

Giovanni passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, with her lifelong partner, Virginia Fowler, by her side, following her third battle with cancer.

The news was shared by her close friend and author Renée Watson.

Fellow poet Kwame Alexander reflected on her legacy, saying, “We will forever be grateful for the unconditional time she gave to us, to all her literary children across the writerly world.”

A Legacy That Shaped Generations

Born Yolanda Cornelia Giovanni, Jr., on June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Nikki Giovanni became a trailblazer in literature and a fierce advocate for Black culture and civil rights.

She grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, but her journey took her back to the South to attend Fisk University, where she connected with iconic writers like Dudley Randall, Margaret Walker, and Amiri Baraka.

Her first poetry collection, Black Feeling Black Talk (1968), emerged from the heart of the Black Arts Movement, establishing her as a fearless voice tackling themes of love, race, and politics.

Giovanni’s ability to blend longing and righteous indignation made her work resonate across decades.

In her poem “Word Poem,” she wrote: “Let’s build What we become When we dream.”

Nikki Giovanni: A Champion Of Black Culture

Giovanni’s star continued to rise through appearances on Soul!, a groundbreaking Black arts and culture talk show, where she famously conversed with James Baldwin.

Her accolades included being named “Woman of the Year” by both Ebony and Mademoiselle magazines.

Her work as a professor at Virginia Tech spanned over three decades, where she inspired countless students and left an indelible mark on the academic world.

In the wake of the tragic 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, Giovanni offered profound insight: “Killing is a lack of creation. It’s a lack of imagination. It’s a lack of understanding who you are and your place in the world.”

A Final Gift To The World

Even in her final days, Giovanni remained dedicated to her craft. Her forthcoming poetry collection, aptly titled The Last Book, is set for release next year, ensuring her voice will continue to inspire.

Honoring A Literary Giant

Nikki Giovanni’s legacy extends far beyond her words. She was a beacon of truth, creativity, and resilience, whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

Her life’s work—poetry, activism, and teaching—will remain a guiding light for writers and readers everywhere.

My sincerest condolences and prayers to all who knew, loved, and cherished Nikki.

Rest in power, Nikki Giovanni.
