Odell Beckham Jr. was removed from an American Airlines flight on Sunday morning.
The NFL star was departing from Miami International Airport and was traveling to Los Angeles.
Around 9:30 a.m., flight crew members became concerned about his health because Odell “appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness” when they tried to wake him so he could fasten his seat belt.
Odell Beckham, Jr. was asked multiple times to leave the plane because the crew was concerned that his health could worsen along the five-hour flight from Miami to Los Angeles.
When he refused, the police were called for what was described as a medical emergency.
“The aircraft was deplaned, at which time Mr. Beckham was asked by the officers to exit the plane, and did so without incident. Mr. Beckham was escorted to the non-secure area of the terminal by the officers where he made other arrangements,” the police said.
An attorney for the NFL free agent is calling hogwash and blamed the incident on “an overzealous attendant.”
Attorney Daniel Davillier said Odell fell asleep “with a blanket over his head which is his normal practice for long flights.”
Davillier said Odell was told he needed to leave the flight for not buckling his seat belt.
“He was informed that it was too late, and that either he would have to get off the plane or everyone would have to deplane. At no time was Mr Beckham disruptive or combative. He was willing to comply with the seatbelt requirement, but the flight attendant wanted to prove that he had the authority to have Mr. Beckham removed from the flight.”
To add insult to injury, Odell’s luggage was sent to L.A. without him.
