‘Is God Is’ Review: Aleshea Harris Delivers A Brutal Masterpiece

Official movie poster for “Is God Is” featuring Kara Young and Mallori Johnson in the Amazon MGM Studios revenge thriller releasing May 15

Four words are about to have the box office in a chokehold this weekend: “Make yo daddy dead!” That line alone should tell you that Is God Is is absolutely not coming to play.

I attended an advanced screening ahead of the film’s May 15 release, and whew… this movie left me stunned in the best way possible.

Directed by Aleshea Harris, “Is God Is” follows twin sisters Racine and Anaia, played by Kara Young and Mallori Johnson, as they embark on a revenge-fueled journey tied to a devastating family history filled with trauma, pain, and long-buried wounds.

And trust me when I say this is not your average revenge thriller.

Kara Young And Mallori Johnson Deliver Powerful Performances

The emotional heartbeat of this film belongs to Kara Young and Mallori Johnson.

Their chemistry as Racine and Anaia feels incredibly authentic and emotionally raw.

The sisters move through the story like two halves of the same person while still carrying very different emotional scars.

Racine is protective, fiery, and ready for war at all times.

Anaia, meanwhile, is quieter and more fragile on the surface, carrying visible reminders of the trauma that changed both of their lives forever.

Watching their relationship evolve throughout the film is honestly mesmerizing.

Sterling K. Brown Will Have Your Anxiety Through The Roof

Now let me tell y’all something…

Sterling K. Brown plays this role with such quiet menace that it completely throws you off balance.

Every time he appeared on screen, my anxiety immediately shot through the roof.

Not because he was loud or flashy, but because his performance felt deeply unsettling in a way that lingers with you long after the scene ends.

That man had me stressed like the time I got pulled over with a suspended license. 😂

Meanwhile, Vivica A. FoxJanelle MonáeErika Alexander, Josiah Cross, and Mykelti Williamson all delivered memorable supporting performances that elevated the emotional tension of the story even more.

Why “Is God Is” Feels Different From Other Revenge Thrillers

What impressed me most about “Is God Is” is how fearless it feels.

The film blends grief, trauma, revenge, dark humor, and brutal violence in a way that somehow still feels deeply human.

You can absolutely feel the stage play roots throughout the dialogue and structure, but Aleshea Harris expands the world cinematically without losing the emotional intimacy that makes the story hit so hard.

The cinematography is stunning, the storytelling choices feel intentional, and the pacing keeps you locked in from beginning to end.

Nothing about this film feels predictable or safe, and honestly, that’s what makes it so unforgettable.

And as somebody who pays attention to movie soundtracks? The music was bumping too.

Will You Be Watching “Is God Is”?

If you thought the trailer for “Is God Is” looked intense, just know that was only scratching the surface.

This film is emotional, violent, unsettling, funny in unexpected moments, and genuinely unforgettable.

If you’re looking for a revenge thriller that’s emotionally raw, visually striking, and completely unpredictable, “Is God Is” deserves to be at the top of your watchlist this weekend.

It’s bold filmmaking that refuses to play it safe, and I truly believe it deserves to be part of the conversation when we talk about the best films of 2026.
