About ‘Hollywood Black’
Inspired by the influential book by historian Donald Bogle, “Hollywood Black” presents the history of cinema from a radically Black perspective.
Directed and executive produced by Justin Simien, this docuseries uncovers the personal stories of actors, writers, directors, and producers who fought for their rightful place in Hollywood.
By bringing these narratives to light, the series offers a critical reexamination of American cinema—in vibrant color.
The docuseries boasts an impressive lineup of voices, including Justin Simien himself, W. Kamau Bell, Steven Caple Jr., Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Issa Rae, LaKeith Stanfield, Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, Forest Whitaker, and many more.
These luminaries share their experiences and insights, painting a comprehensive picture of Black contributions to the film industry.
Behind the scenes, “Hollywood Black” is a powerhouse of talent.
Alongside Justin Simien, the executive producers include Culture Machine’s Kyle Laursen, Significant Productions’ Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi, RadicalMedia’s Dave Sirulnick, Stacey Reiss, Jon Kamen, Jeffrey Swartz, and Shayla Harris, who also serves as the showrunner.
