Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated early Wednesday morning during an attack on his private residence.
According to the country’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, a group of unidentified individuals attacked Moïse’s home around 1 a.m and killed him.
Haiti’s First Lady Martine Moïse was shot during the attack and is currently in the hospital.
Jovenel Moïse was a businessman before winning the November 2016 presidential election.
He was 54 at the time of his death.
Former President Michel Martelly, whom Moïse succeeded, said he was praying for first lady Martine Moïse, calling the assassination “a hard blow for our country and for Haitian democracy, which is struggling to find its way.”
