Legendary Actor Gene Hackman and Wife Found Deceased
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Gene Hackman, the Oscar-winning actor known for his unforgettable roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven.
Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025.
The circumstances surrounding their deaths have led local authorities to launch an in-depth investigation, citing “suspicious” elements at the scene.
Police Investigate ‘Suspicious’ Deaths
According to the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department, two men who worked on Hackman’s property discovered the couple’s bodies after noticing their front door was left unsecured.
Upon arrival, deputies noted several unusual factors, including:
- No signs of forced entry or home invasion
- A deceased dog found near Arakawa
- A pill bottle spilled beside Arakawa’s body
- A heater that appeared to have been moved
- No obvious indications of a gas leak
Due to these irregularities, authorities secured a search warrant to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths.
The Search Warrant & Affidavit Details
The search warrant was approved by Magistrate Court Judge John Rysanek at 9:30 p.m. on February 26, 2025.
The affidavit, filed by Detective Roy Arndt, states:
At this time, the manner and cause of death pertaining to Eugene ‘Gene’ Allen Hackman and Betsy Arakawa is unknown.
Affiant believes that the circumstances surrounding the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and open, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.
Judge Rysanek authorized a comprehensive search of the residence, permitting authorities to collect any potential evidence, including blunt force objects, prescription medications, and other materials that could help determine what happened.
Autopsy Pending: What’s Next?
The Santa Fe Coroner’s Office is expected to release an official cause of death within the next month. While foul play has not been ruled out, initial reports suggest that carbon monoxide poisoning may have played a role.
However, authorities have not yet confirmed this theory.
