Garrett Rolfe, the former Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot had his bond set at $500,000 on Tuesday.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jane Barwick ruled Rolfe could be released if posts the amount, surrenders his passport, adheres to a curfew, and wears an ankle monitor.
During the 90-minute hearing, Rayshard’s wife, Tomika Miller, testified via Zoom and told the judge:
My husband wasn’t perfect, but he didn’t deserve to die. I feel like he had complete disregard for my husband’s life or any other body standing out there.
There were three shots fired and only two entered my husband.
I can’t sleep at night because I’m scared. And if he’s released, I can only imagine where my mental state will be. I will be so scared.
Garrett Rolfe’s attorney argued, “Officer Rolfe is not a threat. He’s not a danger to the community. He’s anxious to begin the process of defending this matter.”
And of course, the judge sided with the cop and gave him a bond despite the fact that he kicked Rayshard’s body after killing him.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard filed 11 charges against Rolfe June 17, including felony murder. If convicted of the top offense, Rolfe could face up to life without parole or the death penalty.
