“Dutton Ranch” Episode 4 took Beth and Rip through absolute hell, and honestly? I’m still recovering emotionally.
This week’s episode pushed the Yellowstone spinoff into even darker territory as Carter continued spiraling while Beth and Rip suffered a devastating setback that could completely threaten the future they’re trying to build in Texas.
Between emotional confrontations, growing tension inside the ranch house, and one of the most gut-wrenching scenes we’ve seen in this franchise so far, Episode 4 proved that “Dutton Ranch” is not slowing down anytime soon.

“Dutton Ranch” Episode 4 Shows Carter Spiraling
Carter is clearly entering his rebellious era, and baby… he is making choices.
Between sneaking around with Oreana Jackson, skipping school, and getting mixed up with Dwight’s questionable side jobs, Carter is slowly drifting into dangerous territory.
And speaking of Oreana, I need sis to stay far away from Carter because chaos follows her everywhere she goes.
When Beth walked in on them together, I just knew all hell was about to break loose.
But surprisingly, Beth approached the situation with more understanding than rage, which honestly made the scene even more interesting.
It felt like Beth recognized pieces of herself in Oreana, and that added an emotional layer to the moment that I really appreciated.

Beulah Jackson Continues To Steal Every Scene
As much as Beulah gets on my nerves, I cannot deny that Annette Bening is absolutely phenomenal in this role.
Episode 4 gave us even more insight into Beulah’s complicated history with Everett, and whew… the tension between those two is THICK.
Their conversation was loaded with regret, unresolved feelings, and emotional damage.
And when Everett admitted they had “too many demons” to ever work romantically, you could practically see Beulah trying to hold herself together.
Also, I still cannot stop laughing at how expertly that woman rolled that joint. Sis looked like she trained under Snoop Dogg himself.
The Herd Scene Was One Of The Saddest Moments In The Yellowstone Universe
Now let’s talk about the scene that emotionally destroyed me.
Watching Beth and Rip realize their herd had been infected with foot-and-mouth disease was already heartbreaking.
But seeing Rip forced to destroy the very cattle they planned to build their future around?
Absolutely devastating.
The cinematography during that sequence was incredible.
From the slow-motion shots and hollow sound design to Beth silently flinching in the background, the entire moment felt heavy, intimate, and painfully real.
And when that little calf tried to run away? Baby… I completely fell apart.
It was easily one of the most emotional and heartbreaking scenes in the Yellowstone universe so far.

Beth And Rip Look Completely Defeated
By the end of the episode, you could physically see the emotional exhaustion weighing on Beth and Rip.
Rip especially looked crushed trying to figure out how they’re supposed to recover from such a devastating loss.
And for maybe the first time all season, even Beth seemed emotionally drained enough to stop fighting back against everything happening around them.
That final scene really showed just how fragile their new life in Texas actually is.
