Former NFL star Clinton Portis was sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a $2.9 million NFL health care fraud scheme.
Portis, 40, is one of 15 former NFL players to plead guilty for participating in the scheme where retirees attempted to file false reimbursement claims of medical expenses.
The NFL offered coverage up to $350,000 under the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan.
Between all of the NFL scammers $2.9 million worth of false claims were submitted.
Portis’ fraudulent claims came just under $100,000.
Shortly after his sentencing, Clinton Portis took to Instagram to thank his legal team.
He wrote:
To my team from #BAKERBOTTS (Andrew, Kyle & Julie)& Adam aka A Aron I thank you! I would fight with you all any day! You all believed in me from the start & worked tirelessly to prove my innocence!
We came up short & things didn’t go as planned but the bond created will last forever! Thank you all!
To my supporters, my family, my friends and everyone who said a prayer it’s bigger than me. “I’ll grow through, what I go through” ????????????
