A brewing corruption scandal at the Fulton County Jail has led to the arrest of four security officers, all employed by a contract firm, Strategic Security.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the ongoing investigation, which kicked off in May, and has since uncovered some serious allegations against the officers.
Natalie Ammons, the communications director for the Sheriff’s Office, stated that the four officers were terminated, though they were technically contractors.
The most shocking of the accusations involves Breaisha Tate, who allegedly smuggled cell phones into the jail by hiding them in a book.
According to records, Tate confessed to supplying an inmate with six phones and other contraband, as well as engaging in sexual activities with the inmate on three occasions.
It’s reported that she received $1,682 via Cash App as payment for her illicit services.
Another officer, Regina Harris, is facing three warrants for sneaking a contraband phone into the facility.
Meanwhile, Laquna Ballard stands accused of sending explicit content to an inmate and plotting to smuggle cigarettes and phones into the jail.
The fourth officer, Anizya Silas, has been charged with conspiring to smuggle a phone charger and delivering unauthorized food—a chicken pot pie—to an inmate.
“We can’t screen for integrity,” Ammons commented, highlighting the challenges in preventing such breaches.
Sheriff Pat Labat expressed his disappointment, noting, “These women unfortunately chose to be on the wrong side of the law by fraternizing with residents they were entrusted with watching over. They will now have to face the consequences for the crimes they are accused of committing. Our employees and contractors alike are held to a high standard of integrity.”
All four suspects were granted bond, but by late Wednesday afternoon, only one had managed to post it.
As the investigation rolls on, the Sheriff’s Office anticipates making more arrests.
