Why Barbie Chose Dr. Opal Lee

Barbie is spotlighting Dr. Opal Lee for her powerful activism, especially her relentless push to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

The brand described Lee as a “legendary” activist who “led the charge” to make Juneteenth nationally recognized, a milestone that became official in 2021.

And when you look at her story, it’s easy to see why this tribute hits so hard.

Dr. Lee was born in Marshall, Texas, in 1926, and her activism became deeply personal after her family’s home was set on fire by White rioters on Juneteenth in 1939.

The Doll’s Look Is A Tribute All By Itself

The Barbie doll features Dr. Lee dressed in her recognizable outfit for Opal’s Walk for Freedom, including:

  • a custom event T-shirt
  • white joggers
  • sneakers

The doll was designed by Carlyle Nuera, and the packaging was designed by Vicky Gevorkyan.

Her Fight For Juneteenth Became National History

Dr. Opal Lee spent decades working to get Juneteenth recognized nationwide, raising awareness through a symbolic 2.5-mile walk, representing the two-and-a-half years it took for news of freedom to reach all enslaved people in the United States.

She even famously walked 1,400 miles to Washington, D.C. in 2016, advocating for Juneteenth to become a federal holiday while continuing those 2.5-mile walks in cities along the way.

In 2024, President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, and she also earned her eighth honorary doctorate.

Five years later her dream became reality, and she now marks that pivotal achievement with her annual Opal’s Walk For Freedom events, showing us all that we have the power to pave our own way, and to be a force for good.
