When the word BAFTA is trending, it is usually because of a powerful speech, a historic win, or a glamorous red carpet moment.
This time, it is different.
BAFTA is facing intense scrutiny after an onstage incident during the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards led to outrage, apologies, and ultimately, the resignation of a judge.
What Happened At BAFTA 2026
During Sunday night’s BAFTA ceremony, an involuntary racial slur was shouted from the audience while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the award for Best Visual Effects.

The outburst came from Tourette’s advocate John Davidson, who was attending BAFTA in support of the film I Swear, which is based on his life.
Host Alan Cumming addressed the audience in real time, explaining that the outburst was linked to involuntary tics associated with Tourette syndrome.
He later apologized to anyone who may have been offended.
Because the BAFTA ceremony aired with a delay, many viewers were stunned that the moment was not edited out before broadcast.
The BBC later apologized and removed the clip from BBC iPlayer.
BAFTA also issued a formal apology, acknowledging the “incomparable trauma and pain” the language carries and taking responsibility for the situation.
Why A BAFTA Judge Stepped Down
Filmmaker Jonte Richardson announced he was resigning from BAFTA’s emerging talent judging panel following what he described as “considerable soul-searching.”
In his statement, Richardson called BAFTA’s handling of the incident “utterly unforgivable,” citing concerns about protecting the dignity of Black creatives and guests.
He said remaining involved would feel like condoning behavior he could not support.
His resignation has intensified the broader conversation about accountability within BAFTA and how institutions respond in real time when harm occurs.

The Complicated Reality BAFTA Now Faces
There is nuance here.
Tourette syndrome can cause involuntary verbal tics. That reality deserves empathy and understanding.
At the same time, the N-word carries deep historical trauma and pain for Black communities.
That impact cannot be minimized.
Both truths exist.
After the ceremony, Lindo shared that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” while on stage, but wished someone from BAFTA had spoken to them afterward.
That detail speaks volumes.
This moment has placed BAFTA at the center of a difficult but necessary conversation about inclusion, crisis response, and accountability.
