Anthony Joshua is recovering after being injured in a serious car crash in Nigeria that tragically claimed the lives of two people.

According to multiple local outlets, including The Punch, The Daily Sun, and The Guardian, the accident occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun.

Joshua, 36, was traveling in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck.

The former unified heavyweight champion reportedly sustained minor injuries and was transported to an undisclosed hospital along with others who were hurt in the crash.

Two passengers in the Lexus sadly passed away at the scene.

A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, told The Punch that the Lexus was part of a two-vehicle convoy that also included a Pajero SUV.

Joshua was seated in the back of the vehicle when the crash occurred.

“The passenger sitting beside the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died at the scene,” Orojo said.

Additional eyewitness accounts say the truck involved had broken down on the roadway the previous day and was transporting soybeans.

The impact reportedly destroyed parts of the truck, including its tires.

One witness says Joshua remained inside the vehicle for nearly ten minutes before bystanders assisted him and helped him regain consciousness.

The Nigerian Road Safety Corps later arrived and cleared the damaged truck from the road.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation into the crash is underway.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said the team is still gathering information and urged caution while details continue to emerge.

“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate,” Hearn told the Daily Mail. “Thankfully, he appears OK from what I have seen.”

Joshua, who has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, had been spending time in Nigeria following his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami.

Just hours before the crash, he shared an Instagram Story showing himself playing table tennis.

After learning about the accident, Paul took to X to share a heartfelt message.

“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Following the fight, Joshua had spoken openly about pressure, preparation, and the fine margins in boxing, noting that one mistake can change everything.

In light of this tragedy, those words now carry a far deeper meaning.

As of now, no additional updates on Anthony Joshua’s condition have been released.

This remains a developing story.

My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, and I am wishing Joshua a full and smooth recovery.
