Five former Memphis police officers have been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection to the death of Tyre Nichols.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills Jr. were indicted on charges relating to the deprivation of rights under color of law, including excessive force and failure to intervene as well as deliberate indifference, and conspiracy to witness-tamper, according to court records.
Tyre Nichols, 29, died on January 10, 2023, three days after being tased and brutally beaten to death by police officers during a traffic stop.
According to the Memphis Police Department, Demetrius Haley allegedly took photos of Tyre after he was brutalized and sent the photos to at least six people.
All five officers are also facing state felony charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping.
They pleaded not guilty.
My continued prayers go out to Tyre Nichols’ family as they fight for justice in this case.
