Kamala Harris, the trailblazing Democratic candidate and current Vice President, addressed the nation on Wednesday, November 6, following her defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
Speaking from her alma mater, Howard University, Harris delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude, hope, and resilience after Republican Donald Trump clinched victory with the necessary 270 Electoral College votes to secure a second term in the White House.
“Let me say, my heart is full today,” Harris began, addressing the audience gathered around 4:30 p.m. ET.
“Full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country, and full of resolve. The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright.”
Reflecting on the journey of her campaign, Kamala Harris praised her coalition’s achievements and thanked her dedicated team, her family, and her supporters who gathered with emotion at her side.
She acknowledged the mix of emotions that come with such a loss but encouraged everyone to respect the democratic process.
“Now I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now, I get it,” she said, lightening the mood with a laugh.
“But we must accept the results of this election. Earlier today I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition, and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”
Harris underscored the importance of upholding democratic principles, referencing the contentious aftermath of Trump’s 2020 loss.
She reminded the nation that “a fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results. That principle, as much as any other, distinguishes democracy from monarchy or tyranny. And anyone who seeks the public trust must honor it.”
Staying true to her convictions, Harris emphasized that while she may have lost this election, she remains steadfast in her commitment to the ideals that powered her campaign.
“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign — the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and the dignity of all people. A fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation — the ideals that reflect America at our best,” she declared, reaffirming her dedication to these values.
Kamala Harris then turned her attention to the young people in the crowd, offering words of encouragement.
For many, this was their first experience of political defeat, and she assured them that setbacks are a part of progress.
“To the young people who are watching, it is okay to feel sad and disappointed, but please know it’s going to be okay,” she said.
“On the campaign I would often say, ‘When we fight, we win.’ But here’s the thing: Sometimes the fight takes awhile. That doesn’t mean we won’t win. The important thing is don’t ever give up.”
Closing on a hopeful note, Harris spoke to the uncertainty some may feel about the future.
“I know many people feel like we are entering a dark time. But for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case. But here’s the thing, America, if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant billion of stars — the light of optimism, of faith, of truth, and service.”
Harris’s journey to this moment began in July, following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race after a debate performance that raised questions about his health.
Biden, 81, expressed his full support for Harris as the Democratic nominee, declaring on social media, “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Kamala Harris garnered endorsements from across the political spectrum, including from prominent Republicans like former Rep. Liz Cheney, as well as from influential figures such as Fred C. Trump III, Mary Trump, and Anthony Scaramucci.
Notable celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyoncé, also rallied behind Harris, emphasizing the widespread support she received.
While this election cycle may have concluded with an unexpected result, Harris’s message of hope and her promise to continue fighting for the nation’s ideals resonated deeply.
In her closing words, she reinforced the strength of America’s democratic spirit and the enduring belief that even in challenging times, unity and resilience will light the path forward.
