Vanessa Bryant is pulling receipts on her mother Sofia Laine’s lawsuit claims that Kobe promised to take care of her financially for the rest of her life.
Vanessa, who wants the lawsuit dismissed, presented documents to a judge related to a legal fight Sofia had against her ex-husband in 2004 and 2008 over spousal support.
In the documents, Sophia’s ex-husband claimed he shouldn’t have to pay spousal support because she was being supported by Kobe and Vanessa, and he brought up a tabloid story that claimed Vanessa bought a $1 million home for Sophia.
The documents states, Sophia responded that her daughter and son-in-law had no obligation to support her, and whatever they gave her was simply out of the kindness of their hearts.
She also said the tabloid story was “absolutely false” and “I would never permit Vanessa to do such a thing. I have not and do not rely on Vanessa for my support.”
Sophia has conveniently forgotten that she made these statements in the past.
Sofia persists that Kobe made a verbal promise to “take care of her financially”, but Vanessa’s lawyers said even if Kobe did say that it’s too vague to be enforced.
Sofia also claims Vanessa and Kobe violated California labor laws by paying her minimum wage and not giving her meal breaks or rest periods during babysitting sessions with her grandchildren.
Vanessa responded in a legal document, “Sofia was never an ’employee’ … she is a grandmother who, at times, helped her daughter and son-in-law by spending time with her grandchildren.”
Sofia is wylin trying to get to the bag!
Vanessa’s legal team argued that in order for Sophia to go after Kobe’s estate, she had to file a creditor’s claim within a year of his death, and she did not.
The judge’s ruling is pending in the case.
