According to HBO, episode five follows the aftermath of the documentary’s debut in August 2025, when the Austin Police Department unexpectedly announced a major break in the 34-year-old case during a press conference held just weeks after the series concluded.
Cold case detective Dan Jackson reportedly reveals how investigators used modern DNA technology and genetic genealogy to identify the person responsible for the murders of four teenage girls in Austin back in 1991.
The investigation also uncovered a disturbing connection to a serial killer whose crimes stretched across multiple states during the 1990s.
Considering how long this case has haunted both the victims’ families and the Austin community, this episode feels like it could become the most talked-about installment of the series.
Episode 5 Explores The Fallout Of The Investigation
Beyond the case breakthrough itself, the episode also examines the emotional impact left behind after decades of uncertainty.
Viewers will hear from the families of the victims, detectives involved in the case, genetic genealogist CeCe Moore, and Forrest Welborn, one of the men falsely accused during the original investigation.
